The Drakensberg Soaring Club is situated eight kilometers outside the beautiful town of Underberg, in KwaZulu Natal, South Africa.
The club is situated on the farm Utopia and as a result the airfield is known, amongst its members, as Utopia Base.
It has two grass strip runways, these being 14/32 and 05/23. The runways are regularly mowed to the finish of a good golf course.
Winch launching as well as occasional aerotow (when required) is used at the club. There are two two-seat trainers and instruction is given to those requiring it by one of five instructors.
The clubhouse is fitted out with full kitchen facilities to provide for those spending the weekend or longer.
Beds are available in the clubhouse for members and visitors.
The club has a fireplace and an indoor braai as well as adequate ablution facilities.
To get to the airfield, go through Underberg and you will be on the Swartberg road, heading west.
Cross the Umzimkulu river after about 3km. Travel about 1km and take the next turn right onto the Bushman's Neck road,
where you will also see our sign post.
Travel along this road for 6 km until you again, on the left, see our sign post,
and after a further 2 km's you will come across our club on the right hand side.
If the gate is closed, it will indicate that gliding activity is taking place and
one of the following numbers will need to be called to arrange access to the Club:
Ken - 082 554 5460
Billy - 083 233 3444
Donovan - 082 895 2009
